The Anchorage (Riverest)
Description
This beautiful stone house on Wharf Street was built on a choice piece of land in 1833, for John Marston. It remains one of Ontario’s finest examples of Regency architecture, a style between Georgian and Victorian. The house is remarkable for its large, chequered windows crowned by arches, two large chimneys and a long porch lined by fine pillars. Elegant lattice work adds greatly to the overall harmony.
Several families have resided there:
- The family of Edward A. Hall, of The Ottawa Forwarding Company later named The Ottawa Transportation Company until 1926:
- Frank J. Pattee, 1926-39;
- Ernest Johnson, 1939-46;
- Hilda M. Elliott, 1946-58;
- Donald and Ann Mclean, 1958-92.
It was Donald Mclean’s mother who gave the house the name Anchorage: home of the family. Paule Doucet later took meticulous care of this historic residence.
It is now owned by Alexandra Quester and André Chabot. (2020)
