Brabant House
Description
This charming stone house, hidden by large fir trees, was built around 1872 for Andrew Buchan and his wife Frances Ritchie Buchanan. Andrew was the son of David Buchan and Flora McLaughlin who settled on lots 10 and 11 at the extreme eastern edge of the village following their marriage in 1816. Margaret Buchan, a descendant, and her husband, Albert Brabant acquired the property in 1945, and over the years, its large tract of farmland was divided to accommodate residences, the L’Orignal Park and the Pilon housing project among others.
Margaret’s grandson, Claude Brabant, took over the property in 1984 and restored both the interior and exterior of the house. He also added a stone and wrought iron fence along the front of the property. Subsequent owners have maintained this residence as an elegant witness to the past.
