Sawmill
Description
Nathaniel Hazard Treadwell built the first flour mill on the banks of Mill Creek in the early 1800s. Over time a sawmill was added.
The sawmill served people from the surrounding area and even from Lefaivre, who came to have their logs cut into planks and structural lumber. In winter, the heavy horse-drawn sleds would come down from the mountains, cross the Ottawa River on the ice, and head for L'Orignal’s sawmill. Area farmers also brought wheat to be ground into feed for their animals.
In 1972, Richard Lalonde bought the mills in L'Orignal from his uncle, Omer Lalonde. In 1982, Richard's brother Pierre-Yves joined him, and the two men renovated the mill. Pierre-Yves became the sole owner in 1988. Unfortunately this piece of history was destroyed by fire in 1992.
The two brothers quickly rebuilt L'Orignal Feed & Sawmill LTD at 1001 John Street. The sawmill still provided lumber services and feed. Fertilisers, feed for small and large animals, and material for culverts and fences were available until 2010, when Legault Mechanical Inc. bought the facility.
