Old Rural School / Bay
Description

The former one-room school on Bay Road, known as Public School No. 2, was built in 1911. Children from around the area had to walk to get to school. Each September, they had to stack the cords of firewood received during the summer to feed the small stove that stood in the middle of the classroom. In cold weather, children from grades 1 to 8 all gathered around the stove to keep warm.
The school closed its doors in 1952. From then on, its students were bused to the new Saint-Jean-Baptiste school in the village of L'Orignal. The old schoolhouse became Napoleon Grandmaison's summer home until 1970, when Aurèle and Judith Nadeau bought it.
The present home has seen many changes over the years, but the original structure has remained the same.
