Members of the Anglican faith in and around L’Orignal began meeting together for worship well before they were able to contemplate building a church in the village. At first, the congregation met at the home of Watson Little; later on, services were held in the primary school and still later, at the Courthouse. However, by 1891 permission to use the Courthouse was withdrawn, and construction of the white wooden church got underway. Located at the corner of King and Peter Streets, the new church was ready for use by Christmas of that year, thus the name “Nativity”.
Pleasing in its simplicity, the church had pews of pine and ash wood. It featured a pine floor, and the interior walls were finished in glowing dark tongue-and-groove ash, laid on the diagonal. In 1991, stained glass windows were installed to celebrate the church’s centennial. Since 2014, the building has been a private residence, whose owners have preserved its unique character.
