Built between 1832 and 1836, St. Andrew’s is one of the oldest church buildings in the region. It was built by contractor William Moody during the ministry of Reverend John McLaurin, a minister of the Church of Scotland. McLaurin, who was also a teacher, preached in both Lochiel and L’Orignal. When he died in 1833, the church had not yet been completed due to a lack of funds. The church’s trustees: The Honourable Alexander Grant, William Waits, Charles Platt Treadwell, John W. Marston and Peter Sterling spearheaded efforts to complete the project. The site of the church and manse had been a gift from Charles Platt Treadwell, seignior of Pointe-à-L’Orignal.
The church’s tall steeple was struck by lighting and destroyed by fire in May 1920.
In 1925, its members voted to join the newly formed United Church of Canada (becoming part of a 3-point pastoral charge including sister-churches at Cassburn and Hawkesbury). However, by the late 1970s its numbers had dwindled, so from then until its closure, the church was opened only in July and August for joint Cassburn-Hawkesbury services.
The building has been privately owned since 2005.
