16. 997 King Street
This elegant red brick house has a long history. Somewhat distant from the street, the house evokes the charm of another era.
Transactions began in 1822 with Jacob Marston Jr., who sold lots 11 and 12 on the south side of King Street to Hiram Marston at a cost of 5 shillings. The lots included the house, the outhouses and surrounding woodland.
Fourteen other transactions were documented before the house was acquired by the Beaulieu family, followed by Étiennette and René Bertrand in 1958.
It is interesting to note that women signed the last three contracts: Myrtle Louise O’Brian, Fidelia Beaulieu and Étiennette Bertrand.
