3. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church
The first Catholic church in L’Orignal dates back to 1829. Considered structurally unstable, it was later demolished. In 1851, incumbent Father Bourassa drew up plans for a new church building and helped with its construction. His successor, Fr. Joseph Bouvier, arranged for completion of the interior 10 years later. The church was enlarged in 1885. Mr. T. X. Renaud, a church painter well known in Québec, Ontario, and the United States, decorated the interior of the church in 1929. The church was recognized as one of the most beautiful churches in the diocese at the time.
Saint-Jean-Baptiste Parish was the third Roman Catholic parish in Ontario. Canonically erected in 1901, it was consecrated in 1931. The church acquired its Casavant Opus 510 organ in 1910. Four priests are buried in the crypt of this church, which was successively connected to the dioceses of Québec, Kingston, and Ottawa.
As of 2019, Saint-Jean-Baptiste Parish is part of the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall.
